Services
David Greening Naval Architect Ltd completes Marine Surveys, Powerboat
Surveys, Yacht Surveys, Naval Architecture and Recreational Craft
Directive (RCD) consultancy, working directly with boat owners
as well as providing contract services for boat builders and
yacht designers.
Location
As a Marine Surveyor
and Naval Architect based in Salcombe, I am within easy reach of the
South West of England's major sailing centres, however I regularly travel
further, including to the Solent. Exeter airport is nearby with
good links to major French and Spanish sailing centres, whilst the
Plymouth ferry provides easy access to Brittany and Northern France.
Experience
With
thirty years in the marine industry and having sailed
a wide variety of boats from an early age, I have practical experience
on and off the water.
I have worked as an in house designer and project manager for Rival Bowman Yachts,
builders of the Rival, Bowman, Sadler and Starlight ranges of yacht and
later for Northshore Yachts completing the Recreational Craft
Directive assessments for the Fisher, Southerly and Vancouver ranges.
As a result I now survey a large number of these yachts.
Primarily
I work as a Marine Surveyor whilst providing Naval Architectural and
consultancy services to a number of respected boat builders and yacht
designers.
Qualifications
A graduate of the
internationally respected
Yacht & Powercraft Design BEng (Hons) degree course at Southampton
Institute, I am a Chartered Engineer, a member of the Royal
Institution of Naval Architects and an Associate Member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association.
Technology
A particular strength is the
operation of Autocad, Autoship design
and Autohydro stability software, which allows me to complete hull
modelling for a wide range of applications including plug production
and stability books for MCA coding and ISO 12217 compliance. I
also run Composite Pro and other ISO 12215 structural analysis
software.
Marine
Surveys, Naval Architecture and Recreational Craft Directive
There is a symbiotic
relationship between each discipline; As a yacht surveyor, an
understanding of the design process and of naval architecture,
particularly with regard to the distribution of loads and stability, directs me
towards potential weakness and enhances my ability to assess the
significance of defects. I also have the tools to complete more
detailed structural and stability analysis when defects are found.
As a
naval architect, the discovery of defects in yachts which are the consequence
of poor design provide a valuable insight into what can be
engineered out of new craft. It is also beneficial to combine
practical experience with cutting edge technologies.
The
International Standards (ISO) which are used to demonstrate compliance to the
Recreational Craft Directive
are of increasing importance, not only for new craft but also as
benchmarks in the assessment of the seaworthiness and construction of existing boats.
